event at Edith Cavell Lifecare in Sumner last week. The event, which also included a sausage sizzle and bouncy castle was put on free by the home. Manager Mary van der Veldt said the candyfloss was an unexpected hit with residents.
“We’ve got one resident who is 100 and she just loved it; she ate a whole bag. It was quite a novelty. Even my cook who was in charge of making it said: ‘This is a lifelong dream doing this.’ But by the end of the day, she said: ‘I’m over this.’ ” For many residents, the face-

By Sarla Donovan SURVEILLANCE cameras may be installed on Main Rd opposite the Sumner Surf Life Saving Club. The Safer Sumner group has bought two cameras at cost price from security firm October Protection and the group has asked the city council, and electricity lines company Orion, if it can put them on a power pole opposite the club. If given the go-ahead the cameras will be installed as soon as possible, said group member and October Protection owner Matt Wood. Safer Sumner set up a Givealittle page to raise money for the cameras, following four aggravated burglaries in Sumner, Redcliffs, Ferrymead and Mt Pleasant late last year. In one of the burglaries, householder Emely van Ras, held off an armed intruder with a decorative Fijian skull crusher. The group raised more than $3110 and Sumner business Johnston Architects donated the remainder of the $4000 cost. It comes as Akaroa police beat the drums for cameras to be installed because of crime. •Turn to page 5

ALL POWER to the Sumner Safer Group (see page 1) as it moves very close to its goal of putting in security surveillance cameras. This small group of locals needs to be applauded for trying to make the village safer. The group has been very proactive after a spate of aggravated burglaries, and ongoing petty nuisance incidents. It wants to put the cameras on a power pole which will record people coming and going from Sumner. All that it needs is the go-ahead from the city council and Orion. On another note, Akaroa police want CCTV cameras there too. The local police are pushing for them – so they must be needed. I hope the city council helps or comes up with the funding. – Barry Clarke

Sumner link in lift-off
By Sarla Donovan A PHOTO of Rocket Lab’s successful Electron rocket launch this week has gone around the world, much to the excitement of the man who took it, former Sumner resident Kieran Fanning. The self-described ‘electron wrangler’ at the Auckland-based space company took the image which has been spotted in American, Indian, Russian and European newspapers. “So stoked,” said Mr Fanning, who Kieran is an avionics Fanning engineer at the company, working on the rocket’s onboard electrical and electronic systems. “It was pretty surreal. As soon as it got downloaded, I knew it was the money shot. It was really cool to wake up in the morning and see a lot of space journalists that I follow, tweeting and talking about it and seeing it in news outlets all over the world.” Photography is a hobby of the 24-year-old who grew up

Rocket Lab successfully launched its second Electron rocket into orbit off Mahia Peninsula on Monday.
There will be a third test launch before the company can move into commercial missions. Mr Fanning said the country stands to benefit from the technology. “As well as the jobs related to the manufacture of the rockets and the ground operations, there’s the satellites that we can launch for agriculture, urban
planning and such like – there’s a whole lot of really cool science that can go on with those satellites that can benefit New Zealand.” He describes working at Rocket Lab as “amazing” and is keen to remain with the company and see it develop. “It’s still a young company and it’s really cool to be a part of that.”

•From page 1 The city council is meeting with police in early February following a request from the Banks Peninsula Community Board to put the cameras into the township. City council manager transport operations centre Ryan Cooney, said the city council has a budget for installation and maintenance of crime prevention cameras, but doesn’t decide where they get placed. “New Zealand Police determine the best locations for the cameras in order to improve the safety of the community,” he said. A decision on Akaroa is likely between mid to late February. Senior Constable Osborne said she had previously asked the AkaroaWairewa Community Board about funding for a CCTV camera in the township and was pleased to hear the city council would be meeting with police to discuss the request. She said the Akaroa community could look at copying what Sumner had done if the city council won’t pay. “It’s a similar set-up in

Facebook change hits baker By Sarla Donovan THE FOUNDER of Lyttelton’s Glamour Cake is frustrated with changes to Facebook which she said are affecting her business. Bree Scott has regular queues lining up to buy her donut creations, which she makes and sells from her father’s bakery on Norwich Quay. The 24-yearold gets up at 3.30am each morning to bake, decorate and sell up to 700 donuts a day with flaBree Scott vours like brandy snap, toffee apple and custard square. Miss Scott started Glamour Cake four years ago but it wasn’t until she started making and posting photos of her donut creations on Facebook that it really took off, attracting upwards of 30,000 followers and prompting national media coverage. But recent changes to the way Facebook operates have hit hard. “The only reason I have Glamour Cake today is because of Facebook,” said Miss Scott. “It’s a little bit frustrating because it’s decided to change the way they let business develop and grow and they’re really stunting it, they’re really shut-

Museum designs under way By Sarla Donovan CONCEPT DESIGNS for the new Lyttelton Museum should be completed by March. Last year, the city council agreed to gift land at 33-35 London St to the Lyttelton Historical Museum Society. Once typographical and geotechnical work is completed over the next two weeks, architects Warren and Mahoney will create and cost the designs for the building, which could have three or four levels. The drawings would take six to eight weeks. Museum society development committee chairman Peter Rough said once it had the designs the society would be applying for funding from bodies including the Ministry of Culture and Heritage, the Rata Foundation and the Lotteries Commission. The society, a registered charity, currently has $600,000 but needs to raise another $5.3 million to construct the building and help with operational costs. Mr Rough said he believes the museum will become a major tourist attraction drawing more than 10,000 visitors a year. The new museum is expected to open by 2020.

Olive branch for boat shed burglar
By Sarla Donovan IF YOU’VE broken into boat sheds at Jones Bay near French Farm and left property there, now’s your chance to ‘fess up.’ Two sheds were broken into between March and December last year, with property taken including sails and an antique winch. But in an unusual twist, the burglar left a sizeable amount of their own property at the sheds. Kayaks, sheets of plywood, a port-a-potty and tools were among the items left behind. Now Akaroa Police Senior Constable Anita Osborne is extending an olive branch. She said she wants the property owners to get in touch so she can sit down with them, discuss what’s occurred and sort it out. “I would hope there’s been a misunderstanding,” she told Bay Harbour News. She has given the owners of the property until February 10 to come forward. If not collected by then, she will look at options, including auctioning the property off and donating the money raised to the Akaroa Health Hub.

But I’d like to do something a little bit different and be the trendsetter, so I’m collaborating on a few different ideas to see what might be next. That’s the beauty of Glamour Cake and being a small business – you can trial things and if they don’t work you just make something new the next day. That’s what I love about what I
do, I start early in the morning, I get to make the product out the back, put it in the front of the shop, and then I get to serve the customer who comes in and buys it, so I get that whole process of making the craft product, making sure it looks beautiful and then being able to personally get the response back from the customer. How do you spend your free time? I love swimming and outdoor activities. I have a surfboard at home in Sumner so normally when I finish work I chuck the wetsuit on and grab my board and that is really great for the mind, the body and soul. Where do you see yourself in five years time? I’m not 100 per cent sure. Just enjoying everything that comes at me. I’m one of those people who develop as they go. I did some work experience a couple of years ago in Sydney and I absolutely love their small, high quality cakes. Mine are different in that they’re big and over-thetop, vibrant and colourful and fun, but theirs are very ooh la la, very fancy. They just have that next step of elegance, which I love so that might be something I look into when the donuts start to fade out.

Your Local Views Making the most of 2018 National list MP for Port Hills Nuk Korako looks at the challenges and goals we might be setting for ourselves over the year ahead A very happy new year to you. My resolution for 2018 is to get back on my bike and increase my fitness and I’m happy to say I’ve started. January is almost at an end, and the new year in our great city of Christchurch and the Port Hills area has certainly begun. NCEA results are out, most holidaymakers are home and the working year is under way. For many it will be the beginning of a new year of study, learning and training. But for all of us, from babies through to the not-so-young, life holds many opportunities to learn and gain an understanding of the world around us. This year, I will be mentoring a fine young man from my electorate who is doing an in-
ternship with me while studying at Victoria University and I am really looking forward to that. If continuing your education is your challenge in 2018, or you have a passion that you would like to pursue, there are many opportunities in our local areas. Take advantage of the fees-free study for first time eligible tertiary students. It’s a hot summer and the Sumner Surf Life Saving Club does a great job providing surf patrols to the end of March, as does Taylors Mistake on weekends to mid-March. Corsair Bay on the harbour is also a great destination. Remember to slip, slop, slap and put on a hat which will certainly pay off this summer. Wherever you are, please be aware of your own safety and the safety of others, especially when driving around schools or past cyclists, and give me a wave if you see me on my bike. Thriving port key to region’s growth
Lyttelton Port Company chief executive Peter Davie explains LPC’s role in ensuring the region has a prosperous port to meet Canterbury’s predicted growing freight demand There is a tangible change in our city. No longer are we talking about resilience. What we are increasingly hearing is the word ‘regeneration’ and people talking about new beginnings. There is a growing business confidence across Christchurch and the wider Canterbury region. Over the last six months our local economy has continued to outperform historical activity levels. Although the Christchurch rebuild has been the key driver of our economic growth, it’s commonly accepted that this activity is slowing down. To ensure our economic growth continues we need to rely on our more traditional sectors such as manufacturing and agriculture – the good news is both sectors continue to grow. Lyttelton Port has a vital role to play in enabling further growth in these two sectors. Our purpose is simple – we exist to facilitate trade in Canterbury and the South Island. In one of the most exciting development stages we have experienced, we have now rebuilt our port and enhanced our services ready to meet Canterbury’s increasing freight demands. This is essential given these needs are predicted to double in the next decade. As New Zealand’s second largest export port and New Zealand’s largest coal facility, Lyttelton is a key contributor to the economic drivers of the Canterbury (and South Island) regional economy, which, in turn, underpins much of the

The port has doubled total container volumes in the last decade and achieved record annual container volumes this financial year and our noncontainerised cargo is also growing. omy needs to prosper enter our lives through the port – from the cars we drive to the milk powder we sell to international markets. We are working closely with Ngai Tahu and other stakeholders as we proactively ensure our operations do not adversely impact on our environment. Some of the projects have been completed and are already boosting our operations and provide strong support for the regional economy and the recovery. These include the new $85 million Cashin Quay 2 container wharf, which has increased our container trade capacity and ability to service the predicted freight increases, and our new inland port at Rolleston, MidlandPort. A key focus of the redevelopment programme is moving port operations to the east, away from the local community onto land being reclaimed in Te Awaparahi Bay. Reclamation will triple our land space for the increased container trade. As container ships are getting bigger, the channel deepening programme is one of our 20 large projects, showing how we are adapting quickly to the changing needs of our customers. Construction has begun on Te Ana Marina, Canterbury’s only walk-on floating marina in Lyttelton’s inner harbour. The marina is the first stage of our wider community regeneration plan providing the public with amenities in the area and access to the waterfront. We support the development of a cruise ship berth and we will soon lodge our resource consent with Environment Canterbury to seek consent to build the berth. We will hold public information events this year so people can understand what we will be building and we will be able to provide an updated timeline for construction of the berth. We’re also proud of our dedicated staff and of critical importance to us is ensuring that all our people, including our customers, suppliers, contractors and port users get home safely each day. It’s great to be back in Lyttelton and supporting local business, in our new offices at the port. Sumner bowl over Heathcote in T20 By Gordon Findlater A WIN over local rivals Heathcote was the highlight at the weekend as Sumner experienced mix results in the Dick Motz twenty20 series at Burnside Park. Sumner began the day in style rolling Heathcote for just 73 runs in 15 overs. Richie Bell was the star with the ball taking 5/13 from his four overs. Heathcote appeared to be off to a bright start, scoring 21 without loss from the opening two overs before Paddy Sullivan removed Matt Mealings. Bell then claimed the next four Heathcote wickets, including danger man, John Garry, who scored a quick fire 25 from just 18 deliveries at the top of the order. Sumner cleaned up the Heathcote tail with relative ease, as the final three wickets fell for one run. Sullivan claimed a second wicket to finish with figures of 2/20, while Jonathan Percasky claimed three late wickets to finish with 3/10 from three overs. Sumner’s pursuit of 74 never really looked in doubt. Tom Gooday fell for just two in the third over. However, fellow opener Andrew Vann’s 27 from 20 deliveries meant his side were able to reach the total in just the 10th over to seal a seven wicket win.

OUTCLASSED: Sumner were defeated by premier side, Burnside West Christchurch University, in their afternoon game.
Both teams then suffered defeat in their afternoon games against premier grade teams. Sumner found themselves chasing an imposing total after Burnside West Christchurch University finished with 179/5 in the first innings. Only Vann and Dean Smith were able to score more than 20 for Sumner as they eventually fell well short, bowled out for 104 in the 19th over.
Meanwhile, Heathcote found themselves up against it when they played St Albans who piled on 202/2 thanks to a stellar knock of 131 from 73 deliveries by Robbie Polson. Heathcote were never able to get near the mammoth total, finishing 124/7 after 20 overs. Sumner and Heathcote will both contest the final two rounds of the T20 series at Burnside Park on Saturday.

SPORTING ALL-ROUNDER: Bella Lister represented New Zealand at under-15 level in Sydney last year.
A TALENTED young Sumner athlete has been recognised as the South Island’s top under-15 softballer for the third year running. Bella Lister, 14, was part of the Canterbury under-15 girls side that won the South Island championships in Invercargill this month. It was the fourth straight year the pitcher has competed at the event. She has also been named in the tournament team each year. It was also the third time Bella has been named the tournament
MVP. At the tournament she pitched 13 innings and faced 43 batters without conceding a single run. She was also one of the top batters, reaching home 10 times from 19 at-bats. Her batting average over the four days was .526. The Canterbury under-15 girls team were undefeated during the four-day tournament and beat a Canterbury development team 10-0 in the final. Following the South Island championships, Bella went on to represent Canterbury at the New Zealand under-17 girls tournament in Dunedin, where they finished fifth. In recent
years, Bella has been part of the New Zealand development squad as well as the NZ ISA team. However, Bella’s talents aren’t limited to the softball diamond. Next month she will travel to Auckland to play for the Canterbury under-16s at the national junior touch tournament. She has also represented Canterbury at age group level netball. Playing at centre, she hopes to crack into the top senior team at Christchurch Girls’ High School when she begins year 11 next month.
